Externals hard drives are basically used for the backup or storage purposes for entire files of the computer. There are so many different types of the hard drive present in the market, so everyone doesn’t know that which External Hard Drive is best. Here I am providing some of the guidelines which will definitely help you to buy external hard drive. These are some of the parameters which we have to check when we buy any External Hard Drive.

Parameters of External Hard Drive

Storage Capacity
It is one of the things which you have to check during buying any external hard drive. Generally hard drive comes in different size like 200 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB and even much larger storage capacity. This is depending upon you whether you want larger size of hard drive or smaller size. But when you buying external hard drive of smaller size than it can’t be upgradable as compared. So when you are buying the external hard drive than its better choice to buy larger storage capacity of hard drive, which can store large amount of data in hard drive for the future usage.

It is one of the parameter which determines the quality of the hard drive. Rotational speed (The rate at which a hard drive spins its platters) of the hard drive has the direct effect on how fast it can read or write data. A driver spinning at 7200 rpm (rotation per minute) will deliver much better performance than the driver spinning at 5400 rpm. So the hard disk with driver spinning speed above 7200 rpm will deliver better performance.

Connectivity or Interface
External hard drives are connected to the computers with the help of USB ports. There are so many connection technologies used in the hard drive which are USB2.0, USB 3.0, eSATA, FireWire and Thunderbolt. Most of the hard drive uses USB 2.0 but nowadays these uses USB 3.0. All these technologies are different in the rate of transfer of data from/to external hard drive to/from computers.

USB 2.0 can transfer the data with 480 Mbps (Megabyte per second) which is very low nowadays. USB 3.0 can transfer data with 5Gbps (Gigabyte per second) which is very good. An eSATA advance technology which can transfer data very fast as compared to compared to USB. FireWire is a high end platform which can transfer the data with very fast rate as compared to the USB and eSATA.

Thunderbolt ports are the new type of connection technology which can transfer data with double speed as compared to the USB 3.0 means it can transfer data with a rate of 10Gbps. This technology is used in the Apple’s computers. Thunderbolt hard drive are relatively expensive than the normal hard USB hard drive.

Some of the hard drive simply store the data or nothing, while some of the hard drive provides some extra features for the security purposes, for that you have to pay extra charges. Now it is depends upon you whether you want security features in your hard drive or not.

External hard drives are basically of two types: Solid State Drives (SSD) and Hard Disk Drive (HDD). Solid state drivers are much faster as compared to that of HDD, but these are much expensive than the HDD. So it is depend upon you which one you want to buy.
