What is Wi-Fi Router and things to know before buying a Wi-Fi Router

ADVERTISMENTS

Wi-Fi Routers are the devices that are capable of sharing Broadband Internet connection with multiple Wi-Fi enabled devices by means of establishing a Wi-Fi Hotspot. Generally Wi-Fi router enables multiple users to access high speed internet with in a small areas like in office or home.

How Wi-Fi Routers works?

Firstly we explain the simple definition of the Wi-Fi Routers, now everyone wants to know that how this device works. So don’t worry, here I am providing the simple working of any Wi-Fi routers. Most of the Wi-Fi routers have multiple Ethernet ports which are used for connecting PCs, Desktops and Laptops with Wi-Fi routers through Ethernet cables. The main purposes of Wi-Fi routers is to converts the incoming internet data from the Broadband or Data Card to the radio signal and which is captured by the network card in the Wi-Fi enabled devices which further converted back it to internet data and now we can access the Internet with the help of Wi-Fi router.

Types of Wi-Fi Routers

Wi-Fi routers may be wired or wireless routers. But nowadays wireless routers are mainly used everywhere. Here we only discuss some of the wireless routers.

Asus RT-N16:
It is wireless router which support Gigabit LAN, 2 USB port and with 300 Mbps Wi-Fi-N.

Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH:
This router is much cheaper than RT-N16, which supports Gigabit LAN port and 1 USB port. It supports Wi-Fi 802.11n, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g wireless networks.

D-Link DIR-685 Xtreme N Storage router:
It has also 4 Gigabit LAN ports, 2 USB port and support wireless networks Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g.

Linksys E4200:
It is a high end wireless router that supports Gigabit LAN ports, USB ports, dual band Radio Spectrum and Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) button. A wireless network supported by it is Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g.

Net Gear WNDR3700:
It has similar features to that of the Linksys E4200.

Usage of Wireless Routers

 Wireless routers provide the wireless internet to Wi-Fi enabled devices such as PCs and Laptops and gaming console.

 It can be used to make VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls or simply phone calls over the internet.

Guidelines for buying any Wi-Fi Routers

When you are buying any Wi-Fi Router, then you must follow these guidelines; which will help you to purchasing better Wi-Fi Router.

1. Ethernet Speed: When you are buying any Wi-Fi router than the first thing which you check about Router is Ethernet Speed. Every Wi-Fi Routers have the 100 Mbps data rate over the Ethernet port. But when you have to transfer large amount of data between multiple WAN computers than Gigabit Ethernet will be best recommended with a speed of 1000 Mbps.
2. Wi- Fi Speed: Basically there are two types of Wi-Fi Router, G type and N type. The G type router is a cheap device which supports data speed of 54 Mbps and N type Router provides high speed internet access with a data rate of 150 Mbps. There are more routers available in the market which supports data rate of 300 Mbps. So if you want high speed router than you can buy type N or advanced version of the Routers.
3. Radio Band Spectrum (Single or Dual): Firstly most of the router operates on the single band frequency or 2.5 GHz frequency. But now Dual band or 5 GHz frequency is also used in the router. The main advantages of the Duals band spectrum are that it provides higher frequency as well higher range to the device. But dual band offered several disadvantages like only high ended device supports this band of frequency and most of the computers and mobiles support only 2.5 GHz or single band. Second, it is very costly as compared to the single band router.
4. USB 2.0 Ports: All the routers have multiple USB 2.0 ports for connecting the pen drive or other USB storage device for sharing the files between the multiple systems.
5. 3G Data Card support: Some of the Wi-Fi Router also supports 3G data card port, which provides the internet access for connected device to the data cards.
6. Security: WPA2 is the highest level of security in any Wi-Fi router. So if you are purchasing any router than check the security.
7. You must check the Ethernet port the router, most of the router comes with 4 Ethernet ports. VPN and Firewall are other features of the routers which may or mayn’t be present in the router depending upon the types of the router.
